The Stacks are six 1960s-era apartment buildings totaling 59 units on four separate parcels just a few blocks from the campus of San Jose State University. The buildings are vertical and narrow in appearance from the curb and feature card catalog-like address numbering (536, 545, 617, 670, 680, and 686). Inspired by their resemblance to book shelves lining library aisles, we branded the community The Stacks, borrowing from the classic reference given to university libraries.
The buildings were renovated inside and out to improve the living experience and included new amenities and features to appeal to both college students and young tech workers. Modern monument signage and exterior lettering presented the new identity. Exteriors also received a new paint color scheme, new roofs, lighting, dual pane windows and drought tolerant landscaping. A neglected pool was converted to an outdoor lounge with patio and a Bocce court. Bike storage was added, as was WiFi in common areas. Interior improvements included renovated apartment kitchens and baths (with new appliances and cabinetry), new flooring, and new lighting.
